Disabled puppy an inspiration to vocal coach

PETALING JAYA: When Derene Lee was asked if she could foster a disabled puppy in 2011, she thought it would only be for a few weeks.

The puppy, which was abandoned in a Styrofoam box at the Semenyih market, was born with a twisted spinal column and could not walk or move much.

He was rescued by canine welfare organisation Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better (MDDB) and admitted at one of their regular clinics in Subang Jaya.

“The veterinarians could not even touch him as he was very fierce and defensive,’’ recalled Lee who named the puppy Mr Gwing.

Once she took him home, Mr Gwing slowly became receptive to her and allowed Lee to massage his limbs.

Within the next month, he was able to walk and move a little and his condition further improved.

Today, six years later, Mr Gwing, who has been adopted by Lee, can not only walk but run and swim.

According to Lee, Mr Gwing had taught her patience as well as the fact that all animals, regardless of their physical condition, deserved a second chance.

“He inspires me,’’ said vocal coach Lee who went on to adopt another puppy which suffered from a back injury in 2012.

The puppy, which she named Capt Maru, also improved and overcome its injuries under Lee’s care.

Wanting to show some form of appreciation for both her dogs, whom Lee says are her pillars of emotional strength, Lee has organised an event to commemorate their adoption.

Aptly dubbed Fighters With Fur, the event will be held at the Deja Woof Café, 28A, Jalan Rodat 3/KU5, Bandar Bukit Raja, Klang from 11.00am to 5.00pm this Sunday.

Highlights of the day include games and fun filled activities as well as talk on pet care by a veterinarian and physiotherapist.

“We hope to raise some funds to go towards the construction of the MDDB sanctuary near Rawang,’’ said Lee.

Making a guest appearance at the event alongside Mr Gwing and Capt Maru is Happy, the special dog that has her own animal assisted therapy organisation called Happy Therapy.
